"...Do you think that the federal government should
have the
authority to stop gun sales to
terror suspects?....
- One of two key questions in a Mayors Against Gun
Violence Survey currently being "pushed" by
the Big Apple's own Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
To All,
Perhaps someone should tell
Captain Klutz that, short of actually obtaining
a felony terrorism conviction on any particular
individual, CAIR and the ACLU might
object more than a bit to the degree of ethnic profiling
it would take to make this
latest sound-bite come true:
Fuhgeddaboutit:
Sam Youngman writes at Hill.com
about the latest attempt by Mayor Bloomberg to stay somehow relevant as the
2008 Campaign Silly Season goes into high gear.
In essence, Bloomberg is
inviting quite a number of Presidential Primary Contenders (and
not-so-contenders, as one would have it) to commit ritual seppuku on
live television by asking them to join those who would make gun control
Topic Numero Uno going into the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire Primary.
Remember, this is being brought
up after one of the so-called "top tier" candidates called his "varmintin"
experiences into question by answering a Tim Russert "screwgie" (thrown well
outside the strike zone, to boot) about agreeing with renewing a certain
firearms ban in a recent Sunday Morning interview. And, in another case,
another top tier candidate showed a certain lack of firearms safety
training (hence firearms familiarity) at an Iowa pheasant hunt-cum-photo-op
more dedicated to disparaging Vice President Cheney's lonely quest to manage
the current overpopulation of tort lawyers than anything else.
Even the one major, openly
declared, public sector-employed, sort-of-blond (can't draw it any plainer
than that) candidate is still hedging her bets as to that all-important
question (Mossy Oak or Real Tree?) when it comes to next September's
selection of waders for the General Election-cum-General Season (Remember,
given recent prognostications over the power to influence world oil markets,
al Qaeda's "preferred" candidate is going to be hip deep in it right around
September 2008.).
In essence, Bloomberg is just making
sure that a cozy slot on the Left Wing of the American Political Spectrum
remains open for Hizzoner's Presidential Prius to charge itself at (Maybe he
can join Cindy Sheehan's Hootenanny out on Pelosi's front lawn?).
Still, it will be interesting to see if any Perot-like
exhibitions of megalomania might not take a piece of out of a Left Wing
voter turnout more interested in wealth redistribution away from the middle
class than in dealing with such real world problems as energy supplies,
national security, maintaining economic growth, and, of course, the
ever-popular ability of homeowners to be able to defend their residences,
property, and loved-ones from thuggish harm during natural disasters. If
that is the case, then it may be that those who have bet the farm in the
current position of conventional wisdom may just end up wearing pickle
barrels when this is all over next November. Stay tuned.

Business is Business Update:
The Times Wire service is
reporting in today's Los Angeles Times that Remington Arms has bought
Marlin, maker of fine lever action rifles and a host of .22 rimfire rifles
most suitable for training youngsters and keep the local squirrels in check.
Remington is owned by Cerberus Capitol
Management, the same folks that bought Chrysler from the Germans for a song
and a cup of coffee.
With luck and a good SCOTUS ruling in
June, let us hope that the firearms business is going to be "veddddy vedddy
good" to some group of investors. Otherwise, we are all going to be left out
in the cold in short order.
Existential Question of the Day:
What are the odds that three
California Fish & Game Commissioners who voted for an ammunition ban in
California have given up using such lead-related items as wheel weights on
their vehicles, electronics that have lead content in the circuit boards,
and a whole host of items made of fine crystal that are considered
traditional gifts for the Holiday Season?
Vegas bookmakers are excluded here,
otherwise everyone should sharpen their pencils and warm up their hand
calculators. Digital evidence of the Commissioner's environmental
consistency would be greatly appreciated.
Respectfully,
