"...Under certain circumstances, profanity
provides a
relief denied even to prayer..."
-Mark Twain
To All,
Someone should perhaps tell Miss Ilana
"Little Orphan Annie" Wexler that every moment spent with Senator Patrick
Leahy is one that requires immediate relief. Dick Cheney thus could hardly be
blamed for resorting to acerbic comments when communicating his thoughts to
the "honorable gentleman" from Vermont.
In other news:
(Don't) Call Me Ishmael:
As the Democrat Convention limps towards the
nomination of John Kerry, voters still have to endure
the finale of the attempt to re-invent the Junior
Senator from Massachusetts. From this morning's brown water agitprop of Kerry
crossing the mouth of the River Charles, to Dreamworks' attempt to pull an
"NBC News" by showing "re-enactments of Kerry's experiences in Viet Nam, Day 3
will seem more interminable than ever before.
But all this bait and switch is necessary to
disguise what is really going on. Senator Kerry and his Donkey stalwarts are
trying to take the country on the modern day version of Ye Olde Nantucket
Sleigh Ride ("...Keep rowing, or over the side with ya..."). At stake
is that Moby Dick of political prizes, The Great White House. Only in this
case, Kerry in the role of Ahab has to still periodically look over his
shoulder to make sure that Bill and Hillary are not in the back of the boat
trying to pop out the drain plugs before the harpoon can be thrown home and
the obsession finally be realized.
Now, it should be clear to even the most
partisan Democrat that not all of the country wants to jump in the boat to
help them row Kerry on a long sea chase. It is not even clear that they trust
him to navigate the ship of state through the shoals and reefs of
keeping American interests separate from France's or Germany's. Give one or
two more months of increasing consumer confidence, and a relatively shallow
third quarter "trough" in NYSE prices, and Kerry will only be left with trying
to polish up the 60's-style socialism that has been rejected time and
time before.
Lastly, it has been quite a long time (4
years) since the Democrats have had a chance at a catch like this. And they
surely have been "skunked" in trying to land the Congress to the beach, even
with a "diver" like Jumpin' Jim Jeffords trying to put the fish on the hook
for them. They understand fully that they will get to eat like kings if their
strategy pans out. With hard work, and a bit of luck, they will stay remain on
their bread and water diet until they change their world view. Stay tuned.

Ba-Da-Bing:
ABC News is reporting that law enforcement
officials are claiming that Democrat fatcat donor Stephen Bing, he of "dump
Elizabeth Hurley" fame, has Soprano-style connections to New York Mafia
"figure" Dominic Montemarano.
If confirmed, it will highlight a long line
of modern donors to the Democrat Party with connections to illicit activities
dating back to Prohibition (Hint- Rum-running allegedly helped pay for a
certain Hyannis Port compound).
ABC News also is referring to a Los Angeles
Times article that claims that Bing paid legal fees from a recent case
involving Montemarano. A lawyer for Montemarano even is quoted as saying that
Montemarano "...is an employee of Bing's...".
It will be interesting to see if the Dems
have not forsaken their Global Crossing/Buddhist nun/union thug fundraising
techniques in the post-McCain-Feingold environment. Given the fact that Terry
"The Pirate" McAuliffe is still in charge of the donations slot machine,
it may indicate that the problem won't end for a long time to come. But it
could be that campaign reform activists have a point that the voters deserve
to know where the money for the Donkey Party is coming from, along with where
it ultimately is going. Anything that will slow down the "street money" in the
cities of the battleground states will be a benefit to a fairer democratic
process. Stay tuned.

A Thugz Life:
If there is any one thing that
conservatives were hoping to see from the Democrat convention, it would
have been the sight of the 350 kilo Michael Moore diving into the mosh pit of
Left-wing delegates just before they got to do the final vote nominating
Kerry. That would, to quote the Gipper (as differentiated from the Son of the
Gipper), have made their day.
After all, it is only by jumping on his
targets that Moore has made his mark upon the world. Much like a certain rap
star from the stage, he "rhymes" away at those whose vision of America does
not come from the fevered dreams of Che Guevara or the Stalinists of the I.W.W.
But an interesting aspect about Moore is that
his opponents are not afraid of his thuggish ways. From Bill O'Reilly
(balanced but not afraid) to Sean Hannity, they simply apply the facts in a
way that shows to all but the most hardcore Left Winger that Moore is more
concerned with achieving predetermined ends. In the end, such tactics are
more like than not to ultimately land Moore's image into the dustbin of
political history alongside that of Joseph Goebbels and Baghdad Bob.
Strangely enough, if the Boston Globe's Rick
Klein's prognostications on O'Reilly are correct, Moore may just be the most
important Democrat figure at the Convention other than Kerry. If that is the
case, then Moore may have to watch his back more from a threat axis emanating
from Chappaqua than from Crawford and points west. After all, there can only
be one "first among equals'.

Le Flop de John?:
Despite the fawning coverage of some of the
Lamestream Media's most dedicated acolytes, the Prowler over at the American
Spectator is getting a different read from some "anonymous" Democrat Sources
yesterday.
It seems that certain DNC fundraisers and
party leaders are concerned that "...this (the convention) isn't going
anywhere...". Apparently the DNC is not polling nightly to measure the effect
(They may not need to, given the relatively miniscule audience share that is
accompanying the coverage. Even Dan Rather is unenthusiastic about the
convention's content.).
What is more, the "read" on the tag team of
Barak Obama and Teresa Heinz Kerry is one of a split decision. While some are
"enthused" with Obama's speech, La Femme Teresa apparently negated his effort.
Currently, some small sample media polls show
Kerry- Edwards 2 points ahead nationally, with the exception of the much
discussed Washington Post poll. If tomorrow's read on the Edwards acceptance
speech is only modest, then it would require a real "barn burner" of a Kerry
speech to gain momentum for the Democrats. Add to that the strategic decision
that Kerry is going to rely on DNC and "527" coffers to carry the message
through the month of August, and it could be that the 2004 Democrat Convention
is going to have the largest "dead cat bounce" since Mondale in 1984.
Now, there is a certain amount of the
crossing of fingers here. No matter how banal Kerry is tonight, the Lamestream
Media is going to promote it as the best thing since beer was first
pasteurized. It will still take work to beat back this effort by the Left. But
given the alternative, where Americans would once again face a
certain Darkness At Noon, it is perhaps best to dig in and soldier on. Stay
tuned for Kerry's remarks tomorrow.

Waiting With Baited Breath:
Patrick O'Connor
writes at thehill.com today about how Kerry's "silence" on certain gun control
schemes is possibly alienating gun control aficionados.
Given the preeminence of gun control in
Democrat Party ideology, this has got to be more than frustrating to the
various party hacks and special interest lackeys who have made their careers
at the expense of the Second Amendment.
On the other hand, the indications are that
Kerry is going to "speak no evil" in favor of expanding firearms rights now
and Election Day. This is at variance with the Bush Administration, where
Attorney General Ashcroft has issued a letter indicating that the DOJ supports
an individual rights interpretation of the Second Amendment. Add to that the
President's support for protections for firearms manufacturers against
specious lawsuits, and support for hunting access, and it would seem that
President Bush has more to offer firearms owners by far.
As noted before, Kerry has one last chance to
speak out in favor of an individual rights interpretation of the Second
Amendment. Whether he will have his "Sista Souljah" moment with Chuck Schumer
in the audience, and the few remaining Mommies left as a "rump" to a movement
moribund since 2000, remains to be seen. But if Patrick O'Connor's sources
hold up to further scrutiny, one should only expect Kerry to continue his
"duck and cover" ways on the right to keep and bear arms.
