CAL-ERT 08/14/02 NOON
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
IMPORTANT LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY

SCA12 (Perata) - This "ammo tax bill" has been "withdrawn by author." This means that we will not see SCA12 for the rest of this legislative session. Thank you all for your efforts in defeating this ridiculous piece of legislation. Keep up the good work. SCA12 would have created a ballot measure for a "Sales and use tax" of 5 cents per cartridge or component sold in California.

SB682 & AB496 These bills seek to repeal part of the Civil Code 1714 that deals with product liability. These bills were redrafted and gutted/amended from bills that were initially introduced to do other things. These bills were changed after the anti-gun advocates lost their "101 California Street lawsuit" against the firearms industry in the California State Supreme Court.

The repeal of current law would only open the door of litigation to the manufacturers of lawful and legal consumer products. Manufacturers of lawful products should not be held responsible for the actions of criminals or any person who uses the product in a negligent manner.

It is important that everyone continue to contact the State Assembly members. These bills could be voted on at any time in the Assembly. Both bills are currently in the State Assembly.

ACTION REQUESTED: Please contact all Assembly Members and ask them to OPPOSE SB682 and AB496.

A complete listing of all of the Assembly Members' phone/fax/email information can be found at http://www.nramemberscouncils.com/legs/asm.shtml .
